This year, our Sunday School is embracing Creation Care Month with fresh energy, celebrating in May instead of the traditional September. By aligning our festivities with Earth Day and the vibrant renewal of spring, we hope to inspire our children and families to love, respect, and protect God’s creation in meaningful ways.

Launching with a Writing Quilt for Earth Day

Our celebration begins with a unique, collaborative project: a Creation Care Writing Quilt. Inspired by Earth Day and the tradition of community quilting, each child will design a square featuring a poem, a recycling tip, a water conservation idea, or fascinating facts about trees and the natural world. These squares will be matched together to form a colorful quilt that tells our collective story of stewardship and hope.

This writing quilt serves as both an art piece and a living testimony to the children’s voices. It will be displayed in our Sunday School, inviting the whole congregation to reflect on the many ways we can care for God’s earth.

Planting a Herb Garden: Growing Together

Next, our Sunday Schoolers will get their hands dirty by planting a herb garden on church grounds. Each child will plant seeds or seedlings in containers or a dedicated garden bed, learning firsthand about nurturing life and the importance of healthy soil, clean water, and patience. As the herbs grow, children will take turns watering, weeding, and harvesting—reminding all of us that creation care is an ongoing, shared responsibility.

Creation Care Mystery Hunt: Discover and Wonder

To spark curiosity and wonder, we’ll host a Creation Care Mystery Hunt. Children will walk the church property and get an opportunity to hug a tree, look for native plants, and pick up natural materials (rocks, leaves, pinecones) for a mystery bag. At each stop, they’ll learn a fun fact or complete a simple challenge. This activity blends adventure with education, helping children see the interconnectedness and beauty of the world around them.

Creating a Nature Mural: Art Inspired by Creation

Our celebration will culminate in the collaborative creation of a nature mural. Children will brainstorm, sketch, and paint scenes inspired by Genesis and their own outdoor experiences. The mural will feature local plants, animals, and landscapes, as well as the children themselves caring for creation. This evolving artwork will brighten our Sunday School space and serve as a lasting reminder of our commitment to stewardship.

Why Celebrate Now?

By celebrating Creation Care Month in May, we tap into the energy of spring and the global momentum of Earth Day. This timing allows our children to experience the renewal of creation firsthand and to connect their learning with real-world action1.

Join Us!

We invite all families and members of our congregation to participate—whether by contributing to the quilt, helping in the garden, or simply cheering on our young stewards. Together, we can honor God’s call to “till and keep” the earth (Genesis 2:15), ensuring a flourishing world for generations to come.
