Growing Faith in the Garden

In July, our Sunday School classroom and garden beds became places of learning, wonder, and growth. As part of our Creation Care focus, the children planted vegetables and herbs, watered the new plantings outside, fed the growing plants, and watched seeds begin their quiet work in the classroom. What started as small seeds and tiny sprouts became a hands-on reminder that God is always at work, even when we cannot yet see the full result.

Each week, the children leaned into the rhythm of caring for creation. They knelt beside the garden beds, helped with watering, and noticed how plants respond when they are tended with patience and care. Inside the classroom, they also planted seeds of their own and watched for signs of life. There was excitement in every little green shoot, and plenty of joy in discovering that growth takes time.

Our Bible lesson came from Matthew 13:1–9, 18–23, Jesus’ story about a farmer planting seeds. As we talked together, we remembered that God’s Word is like a seed. If our hearts are like good soil, that seed can grow into something strong and good. But if our hearts are distracted, hard, or crowded, the seed has trouble taking root. Jesus told this story to help people understand that God’s Word does not grow the same way in every heart.

The children reflected on the different kinds of soil in the story. The path reminded us of a heart that hears God’s Word but lets it slip away too quickly. The rocky ground showed us a heart that gets excited at first but gives up when life becomes difficult. The thorny ground looked like a heart crowded with worries, distractions, and too many competing things. And the good soil reminded us of a heart that listens, remembers, and tries to follow God.

There was something beautiful about learning this lesson while tending real plants. The children could see that seeds need care, and so do hearts. Just as the garden needed water, sunlight, and attention, our faith needs prayer, worship, Scripture, and a willingness to keep growing. Through these simple but meaningful activities, the children also practiced important life skills like learning and growing, and worship skills like growing faith.

July reminded us that God often teaches us through ordinary things — soil, seeds, water, and time. In the garden, we saw a picture of what God does in us: planting, nurturing, and helping life grow. And as the children cared for vegetables and herbs, they were also learning how to care for God’s creation and how to make room in their hearts for God’s Word to take root.
